Last night was the 82nd Annual Academy Awards and I watched it all from the red carpet arrivals to the very last award.  I wrote an article for M.I.S.S. with my thoughts on the fashions.  Read the Fashion at the Oscars article on M.I.S.S.

And congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow for being the first woman to win an Oscar in the Best Director category!

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of mid-century modern furniture design - especially seating.  And I’m not the only one.  From skateboard decks to knock-offs, Eames chairs and the like have been inspiring to generations of design lovers.

The newest product to idolize mid-century furniture is by Bruxe Design based in Montreal, Canada.  Tiny Little Chairs, is a series of collectible pendants that represents a vintage chair which revolutionized furniture production and the design process.

Tiny Little Chairs will be available this month at Colette.fr.

A while back I announced that Uncommon had asked me to contribute to their artist series to use some of my designs for iPhone and computer cases.  I just got one of my samples in the mail and I LOVE the way it looks. Of course, I opted for my signature lace pattern.  You can get yours on the Uncommon Website.

Big Daddy Kane is amazing …. but footage of him on the Arsenio Hall show? Can it get any better??  Watching this makes me realize I need to incorporate “tenderoni” into my daily vocabulary, for sure.

I just saw these on DesignBoom - these glasses are designed “by Chinese designer chen chun-hao & bamboo artist huang to-en  for yii collection.”  I love that they are made from a natural element - they’re probably super lightweight and it’s a nice change from having plastic or metal on your face.  I like to think of it as a bit of feng shui for your body.

I think I need these Prabal Gurung Gloves by Daniel Storto.  They are totally wearable and “the curving sleeves twist asymmetrically around the models’ wrists and lower arms like gauntlets.”  LOVE.

It may come as no surprise to you that I’m not much of a Super Bowl fan - but I do watch it for 2 reasons: (1) the food and (2) the ads. I thought that the ads this year were a bit boring but there were definitely a few stand outs for me…

By far my favorite, even brought a tear to my eye…

I hear they’re getting ready to make another movie…I hope so…the Griswalds are awesome!

A while back I was asked to weigh in on Stylesight’s “Next Big Question” for the January newsletter. You can read my answer below and you can read the full article on Stylesight.com.

“It seems like everyone in the business is collaborating with someone, but the projects that make sense are usually few and far between. Target and H&M are the most notable and consistent, and though the projects produce great designer clothing at affordable prices, I think these types of partnerships are getting a bit stale. Celebrities are also collaborating with many brands, such as Kanye West for Louis Vuitton, but I find the product uninspired.

I think consumers will start to get bored by these projects, and I think we’ll see more partnerships that are really true to the essence of collaborating – where a company taps a designer, from an entirely different field, to design a product they have never created before. For example, when Target or H&M invites leading fashion designers to design clothes, you know the end result: beautiful clothing. But, when you have an artist who has never designed a particular product add his personal touch to that product, the end result is usually genius.

My favorite example of a true collaboration is Frank Gehry’s jewelry collection for Tiffany & Co.  Frank Gehry, the renowned architect, is a master at creating breathtaking structures. Though he never designed jewelry before, his ability to create 3-D sculptural pieces enabled him to lend his artistic eye to creating jewelry. I also enjoyed Vivienne Westwood’s recent collaboration with Cole & Son to create wallpaper, architect Zaha Hadid’s designs for Lacoste and Melissa Shoes and Sylvie Fleury’s “Stolen Kisses” wine glasses and champagne flutes for Dom Pérignon. These types of projects utilize the designers’ innate talents to create something they don’t normally produce.

As far as my ideal projects, I think Pantone should collaborate with a cosmetics and fragrance company, and I’d love to see what kind of furniture and home accessories Frank Gehry would create. Apple has really clean product design; it would be nice to see them apply their look to non-technology-related products.”
