I’ll admit it, I watch the Jersey Shore. It’s like watching a car accident… you don’t want to see but you can’t take your eyes off of it. Every time I watch the show and I see the Jersey girls in their fake Chanel jewelry, I wonder what Chanel (the company) would think if they knew that these girls were wearing fakes. I mean, fake or not, it can’t be good for the brand ’cause I’m pretty sure that the Jersey girls are not Chanel’s target market. In fact, as someone that used to design a clothing line, when I watch the Jersey Shore I wonder what if someone you don’t like wears your stuff? What do you do?
Well, I finally found the answer. I recently read that brands are sending Snooki product. This is really commonplace and it’s a PR mainstay. All companies send product to celebrities, musician, bloggers, tastemakers – whoever they want wearing their stuff. But get this, in Snooki’s case, brands are sending THEIR COMPETITORS’ product. That’s right, apparently Snooki has the “brand cooties” – that is, brands don’t want to see her wearing their stuff so they send their competitors’ products.
Remember Snooki and her Coach bag on season 1 of the Jersey shore? Have you noticed how she’s upgraded to Gucci? Well, word on the street is that Coach sent Snooki a Gucci bag so she’d stop being an unofficial brand ambassador. If this is true, it’s a new marketing technique and pretty brilliant. If I worked for Gucci PR, I’d be sending Snooki a crate full of Louis Vuitton! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on her handbags for sure.
